Her passing came as a shock to me, as I had not known she was ill with cancer for the past couple of years. That's what retiring and becoming a recluse does to one. I wish I had stayed in touch.

Judith was a fellow member of the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, and she was the one responsible for getting me involved as an adjunct professor in the UGA Creative Writing program many years ago. She was a pioneer in the rich, cross-cultural world of Puerto Rican-American literature and taught us so much with her writing, teaching, and public speaking.

The world seems like a smaller place without her.

Thank you, Judith, for great books and a life well-lived. You gave us joy.Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-30347266230766869952016-10-13T04:18:00.001-07:002016-10-13T04:18:22.615-07:00Dylan's NobelI'm absolutely ecstatic that Bob Dylan has won the Nobel Prize in Literature this morning. I think it's long overdue and points toward a broader view of what literature is and can be. He has always been one of my heroes. Could we see this coming? The answer, my friend, is blowing' in the wind.Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-73219854084253667952016-08-21T05:34:00.002-07:002016-08-21T05:34:37.512-07:00Athens Reading in September

At the end of my talk, I asked for questions, and as usual for kids that age, they were blunt and often very funny.

Then one kid stood and yelled, "What is your favorite band?" I wasn't expecting the question at all and didn't have time to think, so I said the first thing that came to mind. I was ready for looks of confusion and even incomprehension. This was about 10 years back, so I supposed they would never have heard of music from my era. But I said it anyway: "the Eagles."

I thought I'd be able to hear a pin drop. Instead, the place absolutely exploded. Kids were screaming and shaking their fists, standing on their chairs, cheering and clapping. These were kids born in the early 90s.

I was stunned. They LOVED the Eagles, knew their music, wanted desperately to cheer for them.

It was a good lesson, that things people really love have no sell-by date.

I wish people didn't, either, but Glenn Frey's shocking death Monday in New York makes it clear that while what we do can live forever, our physical bodies won't.

We've lost so many people in the past few weeks, almost too many to count. But Frey's death feels much more personal to me, more like the death of John Lennon or John Denver. I love the Eagles because they were primarily a vocal band with unsurpassed harmonies. Sure they were a country-rock band and sometimes straight rockers, but first and always came the vocal harmony, tight as a drum head and smooth as melting butter.

I've watched the film History of the Eagles more times than I want to say. It makes me happy in a way that's hard to describe. About a group of kids who had a dream and made it come true.

One of the things the film really left out, though, is how well the Eagles fit their time. I was in college during the Vietnam War, and all of us guys were scared to death we'd have to go to that ghastly mistake, even die there for no good reason at all. As the war was winding down, the Eagles hit the airwaves with "Peaceful Easy Feeling," and it made us feel like we could breathe and be happy again. Sure, it was just a three-minute pop song. But it was also a gift to a war-weary world, a deep, cleansing breath and a promise that we had a future, come what may of it.

So Glenn Frey's death hits us hard, people of my age. No, the Eagles didn't sing blues, weren't heirs of Robert Johnson, were a little too white-bread for those who loved punk and hard rock. But for some of us, their music was, and always will be, the soundtrack of our lives.

You did good, Glenn. Go rest high upon that mountain.
After taking some months off to rest from being in the public eye with two books in the space of six months, I'm gingerly stepping back into the world of blogging.

I wanted to let anyone know who might be stopping off here that my interview with the national radio program "New Letters on the Air" is now online and should be coming to a Public Radio Station near you soon if it hasn't already.
Happy holidays to you all!Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-91685390560660968892015-07-18T04:17:00.001-07:002015-07-18T04:17:36.376-07:00Lament for the DeadI was honored to be asked to be part of a national online poetry project this week. Here is how it is described:

"Lament for the Dead is an online community poetry project which
will mark the death of every person killed by police this summer, and
every police officer who loses life in the line of duty, with a poem.

"The first lie that hate tells us is that any other person is not as human as we are.

"This project resists that lie by recognizing each other’s humanity, even in the most difficult places."

Go to www.lamentforthedead.org to read the poems.

And my poem for Jason Davis, killed earlier this week in Los Angeles:

Sometimes, I can hardly remember who they are or what they did until I read the obituary or story. At other times, it hits me with the force of memory and gratitude.

So it was yesterday when I heard that Omar Sharif had died at 83. I wasn't shocked. It had been announced earlier this year that he had Alzheimer's, and he was getting on in years. Still, it's been a long time since I felt the death of a public figure quite so deeply.

I was 15, almost 16, when my mother took me to see Dr. Zhivago at the old Beechwood Theatre in Athens. (When it was a single, huge screen.) I think this is the only time she and I went to the movies alone. Maybe she wanted to see it and wanted company. I just don't remember.

But the movie hit me like a train going a million miles an hour. It was the first time I understood what it could be like to live as an Artist--transcendent at times, tragic at others--and I knew I wanted it more than I wanted food and air.

Sharif had the title role, and he played what he later called "an almost perfect man." Indeed, he was in some ways the second coming of Atticus Finch. But what moved me was his ability to keep going, keep writing verse even when the world and his own life was coming apart at the seems. Maybe art could be the thing to make the world cohere for someone like me.

I have always wished I'd been able to thank Omar and David Lean for that movie. Obviously, too, I fell madly in love with Julie Christie and Geraldine Chaplin. But by that point in my life, I knew movies were artful lies, beautiful stories to move and madden.

I doubt any movie had a greater impact on me in my life than Dr. Zhivago. Bless you, Omar Sharif, for bringing to life a man who created a world one line at a time. I was adamant about this. My state of Georgia had recently done the right thing and removed that shameful, racist emblem from our state flag, and I wasn't about to have it on my book, which is about Southerners who were against the South's position in the war--and there were many of them.

So what was on the cover of the first draft of the dust jacket when it came? The confederate flag. My head nearly exploded, and I was ready to cancel the contract and return my advance and say to hell with the whole thing. Fortunately, it was a mistake. My sincere caveat never got passed on to the art department, and the cover was redesigned without the flag.

The book went on to win the national Michael Shaara Prize as the best Civil War novel published in the U.S. for 2004. It is a strong argument against slavery, but, more, against white southerners who were so morally blind that they supported a war for slavery--and that's what it was. Plantation owners convinced poor people that the economy trickled down--that if the rich could only be richer, then it would make every else rise. Of course that was a lie then, as it is a lie now.

Anyone who doesn't think that flag is a ruined, racist symbol never lived in the South, watched television, or read a newspaper or magazine. The fact that its sell-by date has finally been reached in 2015 is something we can praise, if it's true.

The shame here is that we've known this forever, and good, decent people haven't stood up and done the right thing, perhaps because they were afraid or busy doing something else. But we need to do this together, say out loud that racism is wrong, and its emblems cannot stand. Of course South Carolina should take the flag off the grounds of the Capitol (a place I've visited many times). Of course Wal-Mart and Ebay and other retails should top selling things with that flag on them.

We should be selling love, not hatred; peace, not war. I wrote A Distant Flame as an homage to the Civil Rights movement, a way to point out that people with good hearts can't be silent in the face of catastrophic darkness.

With the shootings at the church in Charleston, we have looked into the darkness. I've been to that church, been inside of it. And it's time to say enough is enough.

I'm a writer, and I try to stay away from political pronouncements in public because I want to be known for my books, not my positions on issues of the day. Who cares what I think? But this is too important to stay quiet.

We need to make this happen, here, now. It is the best chance we will ever have to let the true healing begin.

It's always pleasant to receive an honor, and this one means a lot to me, since I've won from that group Georgia Author of the Year four times in three different categories. And this year I'm a finalist in a fourth category, memoir, for my autobiography It Is Written: My Life in Letters.
NOTED AUTHOR PHILIP
LEE WILLIAMS TO BE HONORED AT MADISON-MORGAN CULTURAL CENTER ON MARCH 15

Madison, GA—A noted author and
native son will be honored here on March 15 at the Madison-Morgan Cultural
Center in an event called Coming Home:
Philip Lee Williams, An Appreciation. Williams, who grew up in Madison and
graduated from Morgan County High School in 1968, is the author of 19 published
books and a member of the prestigious Georgia Writers Hall of Fame.

The event begins on that Sunday afternoon
when doors open at 2 p.m. for an exhibit of Williams’s manuscripts and items
associated with his writing career on loan from the Hargrett Rare Book and
Manuscript Library at the University of Georgia, where Williams’s papers are
located. Williams will speak at 3, followed by an autographing and reception.

The event is sponsored by the
Cultural Center and the Morgan County Landmarks Society, and will also include
a focus on Williams’s visual art and musical compositions. The event is timed
for the release of his 19th published book, The Color of All Things: 99 Love Poems, which will be on sale along
with several other recent books.

“I am absolutely thrilled that my
home town would think of honoring me this way in a building where I went to the
first grade and part of the second,” said Williams, now a resident of nearby
Oconee County. “In fact, it was on the very stage where I will speak that I
graduated from kindergarten 60 years ago. This event will be a deeply touching
turn in the circle of my life.”

Williams’s ties to Madison and
Morgan County are deep. His family moved here in 1953 when his father, Marshall
W. Williams, accepted a position as a chemistry and physics teacher at Morgan
County High School. He was later principal before leaving for a career as an
electronics design engineer at the University of Georgia, though he commuted,
and the family always lived in Madison. Philip Lee Williams’s mother, Ruth, was
co-owner of a private kindergarten for 12 years before ending her career as a
caseworker with the local Department of Family and Children Services. She
passed away in 2008, but “Mr. Woody,” as Madison knows Marshall Williams,
created and has worked at the Morgan County Archives for nearly 29 years—working
almost full-time for decades as an unpaid volunteer. He still works there, at
age 92, along with Philip Lee Williams’s wife, Linda. And Philip’s brother and
sister, Mark Williams and Laura Jane Williams Kuncaitis, also grew up in Madison.

<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">"For the soul
of everyone who desires to create, this event will be an eloquent love
letter to the muses of literature, music and art," said Kimberly Brown,
director of the Cultural Center. “All through this journey,
Williams speaks with humor, acceptance and candor of what
it means to become a musician, an artist, a writer. It would be too much of a
clich<span style="color: black; mso-bidi-font-family: "Lucida Grande";">è<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">
to call him a Rennaisance man. He's a living poem of a man in full."

In addition to growing up in
Madison, Williams returned in 1974 to serve as associate editor of The Madisonian newspaper until he, his
wife, Linda, and their son, Brandon, moved to Athens where Phil became editor
of The Athens Observer newspaper.
Their family was completed with the birth of their daughter, Megan, in 1991.
Williams worked as a science writer at the University of Georgia for the last
27 years of his career before fully retiring in 2012.

<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">"Phil's family
is just as much a landmark worth preserving as any of the fine buildings in
Morgan County,” said Terry Tatum, chair of the Landmarks. “His autobiography,
which was published in 2014, revives precious memories in those of us who grew
up here and opens up a new window to Madison's not so distant past for those
who did not."

<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The Landmarks Society
is a non-profit organization founded in 1976 and dedicated to the preservation
of the history of Morgan County.

<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">“There is a part of Philip Lee Williams that never left
Madison, and Madison is the better for that,” said Lyn Hunt, a trustee of the
Cultural Center. “Coming Home, a celebration of Phil’s talent and his
work, will conjure memories for long-time Madisonians and offer insights about
this community to those who are new. He and Linda were involved in the
Madison-Morgan Cultural Center at its beginnings. It is appropriate that the
MMCC and the Morgan County Landmarks Society are partnering to bring Phil home
for this special event that celebrates his autobiography, It Is Written: My
Life in Letters, and his newest book, The Color of All Things: 99 Love

Major news: Terry Kay, a member of the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, will be on hand that day to introduce me. I am thrilled that my close friend Terry will be with us on this important day in my hometown.

I'll be adding more entries daily from now on--and I'll be writing more and more about the upcoming release of my latest book. Bless you all, and please plan on coming to Madison for this wonderful event: Coming Home: Philip Lee Williams, A Celebration. Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-86962403312300442512015-01-16T07:02:00.002-08:002015-01-16T07:02:35.069-08:00Emerson's BrotherNice review of my novel Emerson's Brother just out in an Atlanta magazine. I'm delighted, of course, but it's also a little odd, since that book came out awhile back.

I love that one, but it's asks a lot of readers and isn't beach reading, for sure. Still, I hope it says some valuable things about how we look at the natural world and the value of even the most untutored affection for nature.
So it was a delight when a group called Every Day Poems asked my permission to reprint a poem of mine called "Cinnamon Toast" that originally appeared in Poetry magazine in the '90s.

The poem is shared with many thousands of people, who signed up for the lovely idea of getting a new poem in their inboxes each day.

I'm not a huge fan of Facebook, and though I do have a Facebook page, I don't put very much personal there, and I make entries pretty rarely.

But from time to time, one hears out of the blue from someone you're very glad to meet again. For me that is Johnny Ruark.

Johnny and I go WAY back, well more than 50 years. He was an ace Little League pitcher for the small town of Bostwick in Morgan County, Georgia, where we grew up. He had a terrifying fast ball. But he was also a good guy, thoughtful and kind, and with a sharp sense of humor.

I didn't get to know him well until we were in high school, but we had some crazy days, and I always enjoyed his company. He was quiet and never expected the world to revolve around him, but he could always be counted on to get a group of guys laughing with a joke or to bring me a Bull Durham cigarette to smoke behind the announcer's booth on the football field when we were supposed to be in PE.

Johnny spent his career in the Air Force, a good thing to do for a great fastball pitcher. Nice to know the good guys are strong and smart. So he's lived overseas most of the time since we graduated about a hundred years ago.

But he dropped me a note on Facebook last night, and it took me back to a day in 1962 when my Little League team pulled off a 5-1 victory over the famous Bostwick Red Sox. I got two hits and scored two runs, largely because I was trying to keep from being killed by Johnny's fastball--as I recall it. (In truth, I'm not really sure he pitched that day, but I'm going to say he did.)

And what fine memories that brings back--summers and baseball and learning about girls and watching "Live Atlanta Wrestling" on TV.

But I'm never that far away from it. On the hearth of our fireplace I have my Del Crandall catcher's mitt from Little League along with the Mickey Mantle signature Louisville Slugger from our Little League days. The bat was badly cracked and thrown away, but my brother and I repaired it with nails and electrical tape.

I try not to live in the past, but sometimes an old friend reappears out of nowhere, and one feels grateful to think back over that long road.Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-32830839709394722062014-12-05T02:42:00.001-08:002014-12-05T02:42:55.626-08:00The Larger DarknessI was 14 the summer that three Civil Rights workers disappeared in Mississippi. That was way back in 1964, but the truth is that I've never gotten over it.

When I was young, I was confused about race, living as I did in the Deep South. I knew something was wrong, but I wasn't sure what. Most of the adults I knew were kind and rarely spoke ill of black people, though one heard it enough. But I knew there was something larger beneath the surface of our fragile civilities, and I knew that good people too often didn't look deep enough to see it.

Then, that June, James Goodman, Andrew Cheney, and Michael Schwerner disappeared in Mississippi. They were found murdered a few weeks later and buried in the earthen dam of a lake. I remember it on the TV news, remember it in the Atlanta Journal. And I remember being sickened at it more than any event of my youth than JFK's assassination. (I was 18 when Robert Kennedy died, so that wasn't really my youth.)

Now, 50 years have passed, and I'm an old man looking suspiciously at every calendar leaf I tear off. I want to believe that things are better than they were that summer of 1964. I want to believe that we have learned as a society in this country. I see signs everywhere that we do. But then the nightmare of Ferguson comes. And now, far worse somehow, much worse, the killing in New York of one Eric Garner by a police officer using a banned chokehold. And now the officer has been indicted for nothing by a grand jury. Nothing. Not one thing. And the whole incident is on video.

I want to make clear I am NOT comparing what happened in Mississippi with what happened in New York. One was a monstrous calculation by racist thugs that they could get away with murder. The other was a tragic mistake by a sworn police officer.

For Garner's family, "mistake" isn't enough. And it isn't enough for millions of Americans, conservatives, moderates, and liberals, who sense together that we have once again reached down into that larger darkness and uncovered just how much race still divides us.

I wanted to throw up when I heard no indictment of any kind was handed down. And it's hard to know where to put the blame. But I keep coming back to that descriptor: asthmatic father of six and grandfather of two, and it keeps repeating itself in my mind like the rhythm of a train on rails running all across America:

asthmatic father of six and grandfather of two
asthmatic father of six and grandfather of two
asthmatic father of six and grandfather of two
asthmatic father of six and grandfather of two

And I want to believe that maybe this time something may change, that 50 years from now when I am long gone, real change might have happened.

If, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., prayed, "The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice," then that universe has a lot more bending to do. And it begins in all our hearts.

Are we ready to do it?Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-85040212326597809292014-11-30T01:40:00.000-08:002014-11-30T01:40:26.174-08:00Misc.Sad to lose Mark Strand at age 80, which doesn't seem all that old to me anymore. I didn't know him well at all, but he was a fine poet and added much to America's literature

*

I don't live or die by UGA football, though I enjoy it every year and cheer for my alma mater's team. But in more than 50 years of listening to UGA football and watching it in person and on TV, yesterday's end-of-the-game decision to pooch-kick after what should have been our winning TD with 18 seconds left sets a new standard in horrible play-calling.

In fact, that was the single worst play call I've ever seen in football at any level, and I remember football well back to 1956. Coach Mark Richt's explanation after the game was almost surreal.

Here is what the AJC reported he said: "If you kick it deep, there's a chance they could set up a return and take it to the house. If you squib it, it's hard to get a touchdown on the kick. But your squib does tend to end up giving them more field position. That's the difference."

I know from reading others' comments online that vast numbers of people were, like me, saying the ONLY way we could screw that up was to pooch kick it. If the kick works, Tech is close to getting a game-tying field goal. If the kick "fails," whatever that could have been, Tech is close to getting a game-tying field goal. Either way, we "lose."

And at the very least it's the head coach telling the world he didn't trust his kickoff team to prevent a 100-yard return for a kickoff.

I know after the horrible loss for UGA, people were talking about all game's firsts, including the first-ever overtime game in Sanford Stadium. But for me it will always the game with the single worst call (offense or defense) I ever saw.

Bring on baseball!

The simple truth is that I had run completely out of steam in the writing, editing, and publication of my autobiography. And for that reason, I just needed to quietly steal away for a few weeks. But now I am gathering some thoughts again (if not my wits), and will try to post on this blog from time to time.

In the meantime, in family and friends, I am among the luckiest men on planet Earth. I am so proud of my children and grandchildren. I'm almost 65 and my father is still alive and productive. I love my wife, and we've been married for 42 years now. We laugh together about something almost every day of our lives. We both love watching Westerns on TV and sitting by the fireplace fire with a good book on cold evenings.

I love these cold brisk mornings we've had of late. And I enjoy the bonfire we always have at my brother Mark's house on Thanksgiving afternoon.

I am so grateful for the kind comments of old friends and new ones about my latest book. I'm excited about my book of love poems that will be out in a few months.

So many terrible things happen in the world each day that it's hard at times to keep trudging along. But we do, and the small joys of life, it turns out, aren't small at all. They are the open gates to the happiness of our days if we will only walk through them.

A happy and blessed Thanksgiving 2014 to you all.
I'm not sure of all the reasons, but my publicist from Mercer University Press passed on an email that made it clear this event is kaput, at least for this year. So it goes . . . .Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-9288113270901263752014-09-30T05:54:00.001-07:002014-09-30T06:19:51.491-07:00Eugene O'Neill in GeorgiaI've been on a tear for the last several years to get playwright Eugene O'Neill into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame. With no luck whatever, so far.

Let me explain. I myself was elected to the HOF in 2009, and after induction, each living member is given a three-year term as a judge, joining permanent judges in selecting new members. I served my three years with a great deal of pleasure and did my duty to the best of my ability.

I told the group repeatedly that the Hall is only of some value if it continues to hold itself to the highest of standards and remains a tough institution to get into. The judges care passionately about doing the right thing and are open to hear pitches for the several dozen writers who have been nominated to the HOF but not yet admitted.

Here is what is required to be admitted, according to the open nominations form online:

"To be eligible for nomination, a writer must be either a native Georgian or a person who has lived in Georgia and produced a significant work while residing there."

That seems pretty clear to me and a reasonable standard. Using it, the Hall has enshrined many, many fine writers and will continue to do so for decades to come. Alas, for reasons that still aren't clear to me, the Hall has seen fit to exclude Eugene O'Neill, a Georgia resident for four years from 1932-1936 and winner of four Pulitzer prizes for drama and the Nobel Prize for Literature itself.

He wrote several significant works during his years on Sea Island, including Ah, Wilderness!, his only comedy and which is still in the repertoire. The home he and his wife built here, Casa Genotta, is still around, too.

Just as O'Neill won the Nobel Prize, he and his wife left Georgia for a vacation out West, where they soon moved. In those pre-air conditioned days, the heat and dampness of Sea Island must have been a challenge, because almost no one who ever lived loved salt air and heat more than Eugene O'Neill.

I brought up O'Neill for a vote each year I was a judge, with no luck at all. And let's be fair to those other judges: It's a subjective act, and they have every right in the world to keep him out. No, his writing when he lived in Georgia wasn't about the state of Georgia, but that's true of many people already in the HOF. So what is it that disqualifies him? Frankly, I have no idea.

I do sincerely hope that it never becomes a requirement that a member of the HOF wrote, in his or her career, about the state of Georgia. That would make us look parochial and like a branch of the Chamber of Commerce.

Anyway, there are many fine candidates out there, and if Eugene O'Neill is never enshrined, that's just life, though I think we would all be the poorer for it. My small contribution to the effort was to write an article about Eugene O'Neill in Georgia for The New Georgia Encyclopedia.
I doubt O'Neill will ever be forgotten as an American author. But right now it is barely known that he lived and worked in Georgia for nearly half a decade. And that's a shame. Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-73013299723830649952014-09-29T06:26:00.000-07:002014-09-29T06:26:03.599-07:00Upcoming!More about this soon, but my good friend Marly Youmans and I will be presenting a joint reading/autographing at the Athens Barnes & Noble on Thursday, Oct. 16, starting at 7 p.m.

Marly is one of America's finest writers, and like me she has a book just out from Mercer University Press. Stay tuned!Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-89787081984720479062014-09-15T03:44:00.001-07:002014-09-15T03:44:09.883-07:00Lovely TwilightThere's a kind of wistfulness when good things happen to older people. Some have been waiting their whole lives for something really good to happen. And by good, I mean something outside the normal but wonderful moments of marriages and births and Little League games, and piano recitals.

That's the way I felt at two recent events in Athens, Ga., for my just-released autobiography, It Is Written: My Life in Letters. When I started out as a published writer of books some 30 years ago, every action and reaction in my life had to do with what came next.

Could I create any work of art that had a chance to out-last my own life?

Could I create this art without shortchanging my family and friends?

I don't think we ever know the answers completely. But I remember so well how I felt when my first book came out in 1984. I couldn't quite believe it. People all over the country were reading a book I'd written. And most of them said very kind things about it. Hungry already, the praise made me even hungrier for "success."

Even then I knew I would never equate success with sales or money, as most Americans do. My only standard of success was this: Can I look myself in the mirror and say that I did the best I could on this project? If the answer was yes, then the book was a success.

Some of those successes brought it very little money to the family coffers. Others helped us out at times when we really needed it. But the whole time I kept my eye on hard work and servicing whatever talent I might have.

So the first two events in Athens for my autobiography came wrapped in a sunset glow. Not that I am through writing or, I hope, publishing. But the book does mark the end of something. I am no longer looking at how it might help my writing "career." I long ago stopped worrying what might come next.

Now is the time to sum things up and then go on as I can, grateful for the time that was given me, and for the wonderful family whose love I have shared these 64 years.

Maybe there's no greater success than that.Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-15984838265170267642014-09-10T01:16:00.003-07:002014-09-10T01:16:35.747-07:00Sunday in AthensThere's been some confusion about the time I'm speaking this coming Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Athens-Clarke Library.

The event is at 2 p.m., not 3 p.m.

I do hope you can come!Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1428428211607751084.post-11586835218945548652014-09-04T04:53:00.000-07:002014-09-04T04:53:01.216-07:00Big Day in AthensWriters spend nearly all of their creative lives working alone. I also work by lamplight before dawn. If one does it for a lifetime, that's a lot of your life spent in solitary confinement.

But just once in a while, the world you sought with your writing comes to you. Today is one of those days. To my great joy, my alma mater is honoring me with a book party honoring my latest book, It Is Written: My Life in Letters.

The event is in the Grand Hall of the Russell Special Collections Library at 300 S. Hull Street on the University of Georgia campus in Athens from 5-7 p.m. There will be food and a bar.

Here is the marvelous story in today's Athens-Banner-Herald from the great Wayne Ford:

And there was also a nice story yesterday in the campus paper The Red & Black:

If you are able, come out and celebrate books and Athens. And if not, I have more events coming up around the South in the coming months. I'll let you know!Philip Lee Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09661135210167119992noreply@blogger.com1
